Volume Loss Differences in Composite Resin Provisional Crown Material After Toothbrushing with Various Abrasive Toothpastes
Abstract
Background: Toothbrushing with abrasive toothpaste may cause surface volume loss, potentially compromising the quality and durability of restorative materials. This study aimed to evaluate the differences in volume loss of temporary crown materials after brushing with high-abrasive and low-abrasive toothpastes. Methods: This laboratory experimental study involved 16 samples of autopolymerized composite resin temporary crown material, which were randomly divided into two groups. The first group was brushed using a soft-filament toothbrush in combination with a high-abrasive toothpaste, while the second group was brushed using a soft-filament toothbrush with a low-abrasive toothpaste. All samples were subjected to 2,000 brushing cycles using a modified V8-Brushing Machine at a speed of 120 cycles/minute under a constant load of 0.2 N. Surface volume loss was measured using profilometry following the brushing procedure. Result: A statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups (p = 0.027). The group brushed with high-abrasive toothpaste demonstrated greater volume loss (0.38 ± 0.24 μm) compared with the group brushed with low-abrasive toothpaste (0.29 ± 0.28 μm). Conclusion: The abrasiveness level of toothpaste significantly influences the surface degradation of composite resin temporary crown materials. The use of low-abrasive toothpaste in combination with a soft-filament toothbrush resulted in lower surface volume loss compared with high-abrasive toothpaste, indicating its potential benefit in maintaining the surface integrity of composite resin restorations.
