Korelasi Panjang Korpus Mandibula terhadap Tingkat Keparahan Maloklusi di Klinik Ortodonti Rumah Sakit Universitas Brawijaya

Abstract


Background: Malocclusion is an occlusal disorder that ranked third highest after caries and periodontal disease. In Indonesia, approximately 80% of the population suffers from malocclusion. One of the malocclusion’s etiology is variation of the mandibular corpus length. The purpose of this research is to analyze the relationship between mandibular corpus length and the severity of malocclusion in patients at Brawijaya University Hospital. Methods: This study used an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach on 52 patient samples who had lateral cephalometric radiographs and study models. The length of the mandibular corpus was measured from the Gonion to the Gnathion, while the severity of malocclusion was determined using the Handicapping Malocclusion Assessment Record (HMAR) index. Cross-tabulation and Spearman’s correlation tests were conducted to determine the correlation between variables. Results : Short mandibular corpus tended to have moderate malocclusion, average mandibular corpus had mild malocclusion, and long mandibular corpus were at high risk for severe malocclusion. The Spearman correlation test showed a significant moderate positive correlation between mandibular corpus length and malocclusion severity (p<0.05). Conclusion: There is a correlation between mandibular corpus length and malocclusion severity; the longer or shorter the mandibular corpus, the higher the severity tends to be.
