Tata Laksana Gingival Enlargement pada Pasien Ortodontik
Abstract
Background: Gingival Enlargement is the body's response to various stimuli such as plaque-induced inflamation, hormonal disorders, or drug-induced and genetic. Gingival Enlargement or Gingival Overgrowth is an abnormal condition found in fixed orthodontic patients. Fixed orthodontic appliances exert continuous pressure and tension so that the fixed orthodontic appliance causes gingival enlargement. This case report aims to see the effectiveness of the management of gingival enlargement treatment in fixed orthodontic patients. Case Report and Case Treatment: An 18-year-old patient came to the Periodontology Department of RSGM UNIMUS with complaints of enlarged and bleeding anterior maxillary gingiva when brushing teeth. Clinical examination revealed that the patient had been wearing fixed orthodontic appliances for approximately one year. Gingivectomy was performed after the gingival enlargement did not decrease with scaling and root planing. In this case, it was caused by local factors plaque induced systemic responses accumulation, exacerbated by the use of fixed orthodontic appliances. The clinical post-gingivectomy showed that the gingiva was in good condition, with no enlargement, redness, or bleeding. The patient was satisfied with the results. Conclusions: Gingivectomy is an effective therapy for treating gingival enlargement in fixed orthodontic patients who show no improvement after non-surgical periodontal therapy. This treatment can restore physiological gingival contour, reduce inflammation, and improve patient aesthetics and comfort.
