Abstract


Coal mining activities in Jangan-Jangan Village, Pujananting District, Barru Regency, have resulted in degraded land that requires rehabilitation and sustainable utilization. This Community Service Program (PkM) aimed to enhance the capacity of the Village Government in understanding the environmental conditions of the post-mining area and to develop an environmentally based land-use model. The program employed water and soil quality analyses, critical land mapping using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and orthophoto imagery, and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with the Village Government. The results showed that the area was predominantly classified as critical to very critical land, with environmental conditions requiring further rehabilitation. Based on the environmental assessment and FGD outcomes, nature-based educational tourism was selected as the primary land-use model, supported by a recreational fishing area, a pineapple cultivation demonstration plot, and the future development of a fish hatchery area once water quality complies with environmental standards. The program produced critical land maps, environmental quality information, and land-use recommendations to support village-level decision-making. The proposed model is expected to promote environmental rehabilitation while creating sustainable economic opportunities for the local community.
