Abstract

The post-pandemic transformation of the workplace has encouraged remote working as a sustainable work model in Indonesia, particularly for Millennial and Generation Z workers. This change not only impacts the technical aspects of work but also presents challenges in interpersonal communication, which is entirely mediated by digital technology. This study aims to analyze digital technology-based interpersonal communication strategies used by Millennial and Gen Z workers in building and maintaining professional work relationships in the context of remote work. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews with 14 informants working remotely from various age segments. Data analysis was conducted through thematic analysis by integrating Affordance Theory and Relational Coordination Theory as a conceptual framework. The results show that remote workers' interpersonal communication strategies develop in response to the absence of physical interaction, characterized by more intentional, explicit, and structured communication. These strategies play a role in building digital sensemaking, digital empathy, and relational authenticity, as well as maintaining work coordination through frequent, timely, accurate, and problem-solving-oriented communication. Flexible working hours and a results-based orientation are the main characteristics of remote work, supported by affordance asynchronicity and schedulability.
